Approved TMDLs

Kentucky has a total of 38 approved Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) reports. Thirty-seven are for stream segments and one addresses a lake.

A TMDL report provides a calculated pollutant load and outlines a basic implementation plan on how to achieve water quality standards with the goal of delisting the stream or lake from the 303(d) list. If more than one pollutant is contributing to the water quality impairment, each impairment must be addressed in a separate TMDL load calculation.

For example: A stream is impaired for nutrients and pathogens. A TMDL has been completed for nutrients and may be submitted to EPA for delisting. However, the creek was not monitored for pathogens and must remain on the 303(d) list as impaired for pathogens.

It is also possible to have a stream assessed as impaired for a pollutant while an approved TMDL for that same pollutant has been completed.

For example: Water sampling and computer modeling may have been completed, but implementation of land use practices to improve water quality may not have occurred.

The table below lists approved TMDLs for Kentucky. Click on the link to access a copy of the report.
