Construction

Kentucky Erosion Prevention and Sediment Control Field Guide (This is the whole document in PDF or see below for sections of the document in PDF.  Requires the Adobe Acrobat Reader.)

This Field Guide will take you through the erosion and sediment control process. The guide begins with sections on pre-project planning and operational activities. The rest of the guide discusses erosion prevention and sediment control by starting at the top of the hill, above the project site and proceeding down the slope through the bare soil area, ditches and channels, traps and basins, and on down to the waterways below.

  • Part One of "Kentucky Erosion Prevention and Sediment Control Field Guide" covers the beginning through the end of Section 4.
  • Part Two of "Kentucky Erosion Prevention and Sediment Control Field Guide" covers from Section 5 through the end of Section 7.
  • Part Three of "Kentucky Erosion Prevention and Sediment Control Field Guide" covers from Section 8 to the end.

U.S. EPA’s Effluent Guidelines for Construction and Development contains details on pending regulations concerning storm water runoff from construction sites.

*Draft* Kentucky Best Management Practices (BMPs) for Controlling Erosion, Sediment, and Pollutant Runoff from Construction Sites: Planning and Technical Specifications Manual

The following document is the draft version of the Technical Specifications Manual.  This manual was developed to help engineers, landscape architects, developers, construction managers, and others plan and implement measures that reduce harmful water quality impacts from construction projects and other land-clearing activities.  This document is currently in draft form and will be finalized after the KPDES General Permit for Construction Activities is renewed.

(This is a very large PDF document; it has been broken into smaller portions for easier download.)

Education

Final Report - Big Sandy Soil Erosion Abatement Project - The Big Sandy Soil Erosion Abatement Project (SEAP) covered the area in Kentucky that is drained by the Big Sandy River and its tributaries. (See Appendices 1 and 2 for an excellent example of macroinvertebrate identification sheets.)  During this time period, an outreach effort targeted woodland owners to enlist them to complete a “Stewardship Plan” that would be certified through the Kentucky Division of Forestry and to install silviculture BMP practices.  A revision to the Big Sandy SEAP also added BMP demonstrations with streambank erosion (using bio-engineering) and nonpoint “watershed stewardship” education.  Landowners, general citizens, students, contractors, local governments and agencies were targeted with BMP demonstrations, field days and materials used in a nonpoint source educational outreach program.  There was also a GIS component for the Johns Creek watershed, which provided the location and an estimate of the erosion occurring in a watershed that had 10 percent or less plant cover.

North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE) - The National Project for Excellence in Environmental Education – Guidelines for Excellence in Environmental Education - These documents can help develop outstanding environmental education curricula.

U.S. EPA’s Watersheds - Outreach Documents Web site contains documents providing the tools needed to effectively identify, engage and involve stakeholders throughout a watershed to restore and maintain healthy environmental conditions.
