Responsibilities of the Field Operations Branch
- Inspect public drinking water systems to ensure that customers receive potable water that meets state and federal standards.
- Conduct inspections of point source discharges, including municipal and privately owned wastewater treatment plants, industrial dischargers, agricultural operations and oil and gas facilities to determine their compliance with state regulations and discharge permit conditions.
- Investigate straight pipe discharges and aid in implementing measures to mitigate them in a measure known as the Straight Pipe Initiative.
- Protect the commonwealth's water resources by inspecting stream construction and water well drilling activities to ensure compliance with state standards and regulations.
- Provide technical assistance to the regulated community and general public on environmental issues.
- Respond to citizen complaints and public inquiries concerning environmental compliance issues.
