Groundwater Branch - Data Management and Support Section

Section Supervisor: Jo Blanset

The Data Management and Support Section maintains the Department For Environmental Protection (DEP) Consolidated Groundwater Database. The database houses information gathered from water well and monitoring well construction records submitted by Kentucky Certified Water Well Drillers, data from pre-law water wells and springs collected through inspections conducted by DEP personnel, and analytical data from water samples collected by DEP personnel.

The DEP Consolidated Groundwater Database currently contains data on more than 68,000 wells and springs located throughout the commonwealth, with approximately 3,000 additional wells and springs added to the database annually.

The Data Management and Support Section provides groundwater data to the Kentucky Groundwater Data Repository maintained by the Kentucky Geological Survey, to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and to the Water Resource Information System maintained by the Kentucky Infrastructure Authority. The section works with staff of the Technical Services and Permit Review sections as well as other state entities to produce data reports from the database.

Data Management and Support personnel review all well construction records for compliance with state well construction standards (401 KAR 6:310).  Section personnel also provide support and well and spring information to any person or entity requesting information contained in the DEP Consolidated Groundwater Database.

Data Management and Support staff assemble and analyze data from the DEP Consolidated Groundwater Database to make assessments concerning the quality of groundwater resources throughout Kentucky.

Section staff perform extensive mapping of well and spring locations and wellhead protection areas throughout the state on U.S. Geological Survey 1:24000 Topographic Maps. Wellhead Protection Areas are also mapped electronically.

The Data Management and Support Section also prepares graphics and illustrations for use in public presentations and professional poster sessions for other branch staff and assists in the creation of two- and three-dimensional models to aid in illustrating the principles of groundwater origins and flow.

Information from well records pertaining to a specific site, locational information within a certain radius, or water quality data pertaining to a particular area may be requested by contacting the Data Management and Support Section via a Freedom of Information Act request.  This request must be made in writing (an e-mail will suffice) to Jo Blanset using the contact information listed below.  The requested records will be sent to you in electronic format if you provide a valid return e-mail address or you may make arrangements to obtain the records in paper format.
