Groundwater Databases and Well Records

Groundwater data in Kentucky are comprised of well construction records submitted by Kentucky Certified Water Well Drillers, well and spring inspection reports submitted by Department for Environmental Protection (DEP) personnel and water quality data from water samples collected and analyzed.

Data Management and Support staff review all well construction record forms submitted by Kentucky Certified Water Well Drillers for compliance with state well construction regulations 401 KAR 6:310.  Section staff also compile data on pre-law water wells in addition to well and spring information and analytical data collected as a result of inspections conducted by DEP personnel.

Staff members assemble and analyze data from these databases to make assessments concerning the quality of the groundwater resources throughout the state and provide well and spring information to any person requesting information contained in well or spring records. They also perform extensive mapping of well and spring locations and wellhead protection areas throughout the state on U.S. Geological Survey 1:24000 Topographic Maps. Wells, springs and wellhead protection areas are also mapped electronically.
