Groundwater from private wells, public wells and springs is one of Kentucky's vital resources and is the source of drinking water for more than a million Kentuckians.
Groundwater also provides a source of water to industry and agriculture and is the source of sustained base flow in most streams.
Groundwater Databases and Well Records
Groundwater data in Kentucky are comprised of well construction records submitted by Kentucky certified water well drillers, well and spring inspection reports submitted by Department for Environmental Protection personnel and water quality data from water samples that are collected and analyzed.
Groundwater Protection
Preventing groundwater pollution is every Kentuckian's concern. The Groundwater Protection Plan regulation 401 KAR 5:037 was promulgated in 1994 by the Division of Water to ensure protection for Kentucky's groundwater resources.
Groundwater Technical Assistance
Technical services of the Groundwater Section provides technical groundwater expertise to federal, state and local agencies and to organizations and the general public for assistance with groundwater and water well problems.
Monitoring and Assessment
The Groundwater Section monitors and assesses the quality of groundwater throughout Kentucky by collecting water samples from wells and springs. These samples are routinely analyzed for metals, nutrients, pesticides and other substances to characterize and understand this important resource.
