Announcements

(added Feb. 15, 2008)  Statewide emergency preparedness for water systems in Kentucky marks the mission for KyWARN.  In addition, this new organization supports and promotes disaster response and mutual assistance matters for public and private water and wastewater utilities.  Following the impacts of Hurricane Katrina and then Hurricane Rita, the demand for resources and knowing where those resources were available overwhelmed the ability to effectively coordinate the initial response.  Realizing that utilities needed a different approach, the water community and state agencies join together to create the Kentucky Water/Wastewater Response Network or KyWARN.  Visit http://www.kywarn.org/ to become a member and explore the KyWARN tutorial.

CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT

Drinking Water Branch staff can help public water systems improved their technical, managerial and financial framework through the capacity development program.

COMPLIANCE SECTION

The Compliance Section administers the state drinking water regulations. The Compliance Section, like the Permits and Plans Section in the Drinking Water Branch, has a critical role in assisting the Division of Water to maintain primacy. Just a few of the section's duties include public water supervision, public notification review, attributes of primacyreview of monitoring and reporting data (Monthly Operating Reports) and maintaining the database, Safe Drinking Water Information System (SDWIS/State)

EMERGENCY PREPARDNESS AND DISINFECTION OF DRINKING WATER

Public water systems should refer to the technical document "Using Alternate Source of Water During Emergencies" during periods of drought, contamination of the primary water source or failure of a dam.  Homeowners should call in advance the local health department or local Emergency Management office about how to be prepared and for recommendations during an emergency.  During an emergency or disaster, listen for announcements from the health department and emergency management.   This information for homeowners on emergency disinfection of drinking water was prepared through resources provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

OPERATOR CERTIFICATION

Call the Division of Compliance Assistance at 800-926-8111 for information about operator certification.

REGULATIONS

Public water supply regulations (unofficial) are located in Title 401 KAR Chapter 8. The official versions are contained in the Kentucky Administrative Regulations Service and in the monthly Administrative Register of Kentucky. For information on how to subscribe to these publications, contact the Legislative Research Commission at 502-564-8100, ext. 564.

DRAFT water regulations may be viewed on the Statutes and Regulations Web page.

SDWIS/State

Visit the SDWIS page where tools are provided for electronic submission of data through the use of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI).  The SDWIS page contains MS Access application programs and relevant documents for SDWIS/State.

STATE REVOLVING FUND

Kentucky's Environmental and Public Protection Cabinet's (EPPC) Division of Water (DOW) and Kentucky Infrastructure Authority (KIA), jointly through an interagency agreement, provide communities with funds from the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (DWSRF) to comply with the requirements of the Safe Drinking Water Act.

VIRTUAL WATER PLANT TOUR

EPA offers a new, free CD-ROM that they released February 2006 titled “Virtual Water Treatment Plant Tour.”  This CD provides a guided tour of a water treatment plant and has been described by reviewers as a great educational tool for students, teachers, public officials and consumers.  The CD-ROM shows step-by-step how source water moves through the treatment and distribution processes and ends up in the customer’s home or business.

To reach a wider audience, the CD-ROM is available in both English and Spanish on the same CD.

If you would like a copy, you can send an e-mail to Outreach.Team@epa.gov but be sure to include these four items in your e-mail: (1) the CD-ROM publication Number EPA 816-C-06-002, (2) your name, (3) postal mail address and (4) quantity requested.

You may also call the Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 800-426-4791 to request the CD-ROM, EPA 816-C-06-002, the new “Virtual Water Treatment Plant Tour.”
