Division of Water

Skegg Creek, Rockcastle County

The mission of the Kentucky Division of Water is to manage, protect and enhance the quality and quantity of the commonwealth's water resources for present and future generations through voluntary, regulatory and educational programs.

Water Wise Suggestions

  • Use water only when you need it and turn off the faucet when you are finished.
  • Turn off the water while you brush your teeth with toothpaste, then turn it on again to rinse or use water in a glass to rinse.
  • Keep a pitcher of water in the refrigerator for when you want a cold drink of water.
  • Place a layer of mulch around trees and plants to help retain water.
  • When landscaping, use drought-tolerant plants.
  • Turn the lights off when you don't need them. Water is often used to generate electricity in the U.S.
  • Don't stay in the shower longer than you need to. Turn off the water while you soap up.
  • Don't throw junk or litter into rivers or lakes. Save the habitat for fish and other aquatic life.
  • Reduce the amount of water used by the toilet by placing a plastic milk carton filled with water inside the toilet tank.
  • Do not flush pharmaceuticals in the toilet or down any other drain.
  • Repair leaky faucets in the home.

New Discharge Monitoring Report Manual available

The Division of Compliance Assistance has completed the Discharge Monitoring Report (DMR) Manual for use as a guidance document for holders (and applicants) of National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits. Click on Discharge Monitoring Report Manual in the KPDES box at the right to access the document.

Spring Issue of Streamline available

Read in the May issue of Streamline about the new Eastern Regional Reclamation Facility recently completed in Northern Kentucky. The new wastewater treatment plant is expected to alleviate the storm water overflows that have plagued Campbell County while preparing the region for future population growth. Also read updates on the Drinking Water and Clean Water State Revolving Funds.

Drive home your support for the outdoors and keep Kentucky in a natural state by buying a Nature License Plate. All proceeds from the sale of nature license plates are deposited into the Kentucky Heritage Land Conservation Funds, and the Wild Rivers Program receives 10 percent of those funds.

Public notices, permit information available online

Public notices of Division of Water (DOW) agency actions are now available for review electronically on the public notice page. This tool is designed to facilitate public participation and provide easier access to documents. Documents may include applications, fact sheets, draft permits and other related information.

“Currently, persons interested in reviewing permit applications and accompanying documents are required to submit a formal request to the division under the Freedom of Information Act,” said Peter Goodmann, DOW assistant director. “This tool will make it easier for the public to obtain important environmental information while allowing the Division of Water to conserve resources.”
