Water conservation

by Jennifer Howard

Summer has arrived with high temperatures and less rainfall. During these times, saving water can be very important. Here are some simple tips to help you save water every day.

- Mulch trees, shrubs, flowers and vegetable gardens to help retain soil moisture.

- Use a broom or blower to clean driveways, sidewalks and patios instead of the hose.

- Water lawns, gardens and landscaping in the early morning or late in the evening. This will help reduce water lost to evaporation.

- Collect rainwater for watering plants.

- Use a small pool for outdoor play for children instead of using a hose or sprinkler.

- Check hoses, faucets, and sprinklers for water leaks. One dripping faucet can use up to 25 gallons of water per day.

For more information about conserving water, contact the Clark County Extension Office at 744-4682.
